When you’re trying to conceive — whether naturally or with support like IVF — most of the focus rightly tends to fall on your physical health, nutrition, how you’re managing stress, your mindset and lifestyle.

And while these are all incredibly important pieces of the puzzle, there’s one area that is often overlooked…

 Your home environment.

Many of the everyday products we use — from cleaning sprays and shampoo to air fresheners and plastic food containers — can contain ingredients that interfere with your hormones, and have a negative impact on your reproductive health. These are known as endocrine disruptors.

And unfortunately, they don’t just affect women. Male fertility is also being impacted — and it’s time we talked more openly about it.

What are endocrine disruptors — and why do they matter?

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that interfere with the body’s hormone system. They can mimic or block hormones like oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone — throwing your hormonal balance off course.

These chemical compounds are found in:

  • Plastic containers and water bottles (especially those with BPA’s)
  • Personal care products like moisturisers, shampoo, and deodorant
  • Cosmetics
  • Non-stick cookware (like Teflon)
  • Household cleaning products
  • Fragranced items like candles, air fresheners, and even laundry detergent
  • Pesticides on non-organic produce

Even though you can’t see them, these substances can enter the body through your skin, your lungs, or your food — and the effects build up over time.

The fertility fallout: what science is telling us

Research shows that endocrine disruptors can have a serious effect on fertility.

For women, they’ve been linked to:

  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Irregular or missing periods
  • PCOS, endometriosis, and fibroids
  • Miscarriage
  • Difficulties with implantation

For men, exposure can lead to:

  • Lower testosterone levels
  • Poor sperm quality (motility, morphology, and count)
  • Increased DNA fragmentation in sperm
  • Reduced libido and sexual function

In fact, male fertility rates have been declining for decades, with some studies showing that average sperm counts have dropped by more than 50% in the last 40 years. Toxins and lifestyle factors are key contributors — and many men aren’t even aware of the impact.

But here’s the empowering part…

Once you know what you’re looking for, you can start to reduce your exposure to these harmful chemicals. And every small change you make adds up — for your body, your partner’s, and the healthy baby you hope to welcome one day.
