Coconut can be consumed in so many different ways. Whether it be as milk, cream, coconut water, coconut oil, dessicated cocount, coconut chips. Then you can use it on your skin and hair to great effect too. What an incredibly versatile thing. Though it is called a nut it is not a true nut. It isn’t a fruit either. In fact it can be a fruit, a nut and a seed. It is what is known as a drupe.  It has an outer fleshy part that surrounds a pit of hardened endocarp with a seed inside.

So what are the wonders of Coconut.

Well the health benefits of coconut oil are as follows:
• Great for hair care

The key benefits of coconut oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid because it has the following properties: antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-fungal, antibacterial and soothing qualities.
So you can see it is pretty amazing stuff.

There are so many ways you can bring coconut into your diet.

Cooking with Virgin Organic Coconut oil.

Replace your normal cooking oil with coconut oil but make sure it is Virgin Coconut oil and organic is even better.

Coconut Milk

You can use coconut milk as a great alternative to normal cow’s milk. It can also be made into yoghurt.  Ideal if you are dairy intolerant.

Coconut Water

Coconut water can be a refreshing drink and is said to be good for rehydration after sport. Whilst it is relatively low in calories and low in fat, and contains high doses of the most important vitamins and minerals. The thing that you need to be aware of is that most of the calories in coconut water come from sugar. Natural coconut water (there are some brands where sugar is added too so beware) contains 1 tsp of sugar per 100ml which adds up to more than 3 teaspoons for a 330 ml serving. The flavoured coconut waters have even more sugar added. So it is not good to be drinking coconut water all the time. It can be good if you are unwell and unable to eat as it does provide nourishment in a liquid form.

Dessicated Coconut and Coconut Chips

Dessicated coconut can be used in cooking and is great to add to your porridge in the morning. Coconut chips are larger bits of coconut that can be a great snack to nibble on.

Coconut oil contains a large quantity of saturated fats and this has led to the misconception that coconut oil is not good for heart health. In reality, coconut oil is beneficial for the heart. The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful but beneficial to your health. Coconut oil reduces the incidence of injury and damage to arteries and therefore helps in preventing atherosclerosis.

Weight loss

Coconut oil is a very useful aid for weight loss as it contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight.  It helps the thyroid and endocrine system to work effectively.  In addition, it also increases the body’s metabolic rate by removing stress on the pancreas. As a result the body burns more energy and this helps people who are overweight or obese to lose weight.
